Bathtub Refinishing vs. Bathtub Replacement

Bathtub Refinishing and Resurfacing

Repairing your bath tubs by resurfacing or refinishing can be a more affordable option than replacing your bathtub.  A bathtub refinishing service can create a dramatic positive impact on the appearance of your entire bathroom.

Bathtub Refinishing Before and After

Here’s How it Works

The bathtub refinishing process has several stages.

  1. First, we clean we thoroughly clean the tub surface,
  2. And then prep the surface by either sanding or chemical stripping.
  3. Then we spray on a new surface glaze coating.
  4. After the glaze cures we lightly sand the tub and buff to a super shine.

This entire process takes a few hours or less. Then it must dry and cure for about another 24 hours depending on the weather. That’s it! Your new surface is now ready to enjoy.

Refinishing vs. Replacing

In contrast to the speed and simplicity or refinishing, replacing is a huge undertaking.

  1. Tub is cut up or demolished in some way
  2. Remove large pieces and clean rubble and smaller debris
  3. Tear out flooring as necessary
  4. Remove pipes and plumbing as necessary
  5. If the bathroom doorway is too small to fit new tub though then it must be cut open to make wider.
  6. Upgrade and install flooring as necessary
  7. Upgrade and install plumbing as necessary
  8. Install new bath tub
  9. Install new tub surround or new wall tile
  10. Final clean up
  11. Pay HUGE construction bill
Tub Replacement Nightmare. Bathtub refinishing is a much better option.

Tub Replacement Nightmare

This entire process takes at minimum 3 days. And only if a large crew descends upon your house and they are dedicated to finishing quickly. And if there are no problems in the demolition or reconstruction. AND if all the parts are in hand and ready to install. That’s a lot of “if’s” and “maybes” to contend with. Usually a job like this takes 2-3 weeks. Images having a part of your home torn apart and unusable for nearly a month! And then you get to pay up to $10,000 or more for it.

Bathtub Refinishing Makes Sense

Bathtub refinishing is sounding pretty good now, isn’t it? Especially since it’s less than $500 and you can use your bathroom again the next day. Unless your tub has damage beyond reasonable repair, then it’s always a lower cost and faster option to refinish rather than replace.

Cost vs. Value

While there are “do it yourself” bath tub refinishing kits available at home improvement stores it’s best to leave this task to a professional. We have all the special tools and training to do the job right the first time. And the coating glaze is toxic when wet. So you don’t want to be breathing those fumes. It is, however, totally safe after it dries.

Also, our coating is industrial grade and we spray it on with professional spray guns. The DIY kits are not even close to the high quality product that we deliver. So that means it won’t turn out as well. And it won’t last as long either.

So if you do it yourself you won’t be saving yourself any money. Think of all the time it takes to learn how to do this job right. Then buy the tools and refinishing chemicals. Then take the time to do the job. And then there’s a strong chance, no matter how hard you try, it just won’t look as good. And after all that time, money, and effort, your new surface will not hold up for too long before it chips, cracks, or peels off.
